2022 Spring Garden Updates

Whitesburg Library Community Garden

Volunteer highlight: Ruth Fuller

Ms. Fuller worked with Keep Carroll Beautiful, Whitesburg Public Library, and the City of Whitesburg to bring the Community Garden to life! Vegetables and fruit grown in this garden are donated through local food drives and pantries. In 2021, Ms. Fuller donated 60 pounds of vegetables and 20 bags of greens!

Big thanks to Carroll EMC for sending us three awesome volunteers- Jamey Lambert, Taylor Ledbetter, and Carlos Martinez! With materials purchased with a Carroll EMC Foundation grant, we were able to build 3 new garden beds for the Whitesburg Library Community Garden and fill them full of dirt. Three tons of dirt to be exact!

Shoutout to Ms. Ruth Fuller for heading the garden project and distributing the produce through local food drives. We cannot wait to see what you can grow with the new beds!

Knox Park Community Garden

Knox Park received an update on Earth Day 2022! Thanks to RALIN volunteers and soil and plants purchased with Carroll EMC Foundation funds, residents enjoying the park, walking paths, and playground, can enjoy a beautiful pollinator garden, pick up fresh flowers and herbs, and snack on cherry tomatoes, blueberries, and blackberries!

Coming soon: fruit trees and small landscaping improvements around the playground!

Backyard Garden Compost Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Air
  • Water
  • 2/3 Carbon (brown) source (dead, dried plant parts – leaves or pine needles)
  • 1/3 Nitrogen (green) source (fresh plant parts – grass clippings or kitchen vegetable and fruit scraps)

Directions:

Begin with 6 inches of carbon. Add a layer of nitrogen a few inches thick. Finally, add water until moist (like a wrung-out sponge)! Maintain your compost bin by adding more carbon, nitrogen, and water then wait for the magic of micro-organisms to happen. Stir the contents about once a week for even distribution of nitrogen, carbon, water and oxygen. When the compost is ready, remove from the bin and use in your garden.
